Museum of Kriva Palanka

The Municipal Museum of Kriva Palanka, established in October 2006, is an important cultural institution that preserves and presents the rich cultural and historical heritage of the region. It is housed in the former House of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia (ARM), a building constructed in 1926/27, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the city. The museum covers an area of approximately 500 square metres, including exhibition halls, storerooms, offices and auxiliary rooms.

The museum has a multidisciplinary character, covering various fields such as ethnology, archaeology, history, art history, numismatics and the history of technology. The ethnological exhibition, renovated between 2016 and 2018, is divided into two sections: rural and urban, depicting life in the city at the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The archaeological exhibition, opened in March 2013, presents artefacts from archaeological sites such as Blidež, Mal Kamleš, Mogila and others, which provide evidence of continuous settlement in the region from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

A part of the museum is the Town Art Gallery, where temporary thematic exhibitions are organised. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the museum regularly organises exhibitions, promotions, concerts, workshops and presentations that enrich the cultural life of Kriva Palanka. Throughout the year, about thirty cultural events take place, and the museum is a co-organiser of all major municipal events.

More than 2,170 museum artefacts have been collected and processed so far, mostly donated by the inhabitants of Kriva Palanka and the surrounding area, as well as acquired through purchases and archaeological research at the above-mentioned archaeological sites. The institution also has a gallery for temporary exhibitions, storage facilities, a conservation workshop and a souvenir shop.

The museum’s souvenir shop, opened in 2011, offers a wide range of items reflecting the cultural heritage of the city and the country. The museum strives to source souvenirs from local artisans and independent artists who put a lot of dedication into their handmade creations.

The museum also has a library which is updated annually with new specialist literature in the fields of ethnology, history, archaeology and art history. The library is open to the public for research and educational purposes.

There are other important cultural and historical monuments in the vicinity of Kriva Palanka. About 3 kilometres from the town, on the slopes of Osogovo Mountain, is the St. Joachim Osogovski Monastery, one of the most famous religious sites in northern Macedonia. Founded in the 12th century, it is an important spiritual and cultural centre with a rich history and remarkable architecture.

Ginovci Park, located a few kilometres from Kriva Palanka, is an ideal place for relaxation and recreation. The park offers numerous cafes and restaurants, as well as a zoo that will delight animal lovers. Visitors can enjoy walks, meals and photography in a pleasant natural environment.

Kriva Palanka and its surroundings have a rich cultural and natural heritage that is well worth exploring and experiencing.
